Agave ghiesbreghtii grows in Mexico in Puebla, Oaxaca, Guerrero, Chiapas and in Guatemala on stony slopes, in grass and woodlands up to 2200 m altitude. It is associated with succulent and cactus species.

The first description by Lemaire ex Jacobi was published in 1864. Synonyms are Agave roezliana (Baker), Agave purpusorum (Berger), Agave huehueteca (Standley & Steyermark).

Agave ghiesbreghtii is a member of the Marginatae group. The short, broad leaves are typical. The narrow, horny leaf margins are serrated. It is closely related to agave kerchovei.
